Zabojsko Lake is surrounded by dense coniferous and beech forests and is located in the northeastern part of Sinjajevina at an elevation of 1,477 meters above sea level. Due to its exceptional natural value, it is protected within the framework of Durmitor National Park under strict conservation regulations. The lake covers an area of 27,600 square meters but, due to its considerable depth, it has a relatively large volume, nearly 170,000 cubic meters.
There is a legend associated with this lake, as is the case with many of our lakes. According to the legend, the lake used to be on the right bank of the Tara River, in the Zaboj Mountain. A shepherdess who was watering her cattle at the lake became pregnant while unmarried. To conceal the shame, she drowned her newborn child and fled to the Dobrilovina Monastery. She began to shepherd sheep for the monks on Jelina Mountain, but God punished her for her wrongdoing by lifting all the water from the lake with a strong wind and pouring it onto her and Jelina Mountain. Thus, the lake was moved from Zaboj to the left bank of the Tara River, but its name remained, and the former lake area is now a large meadow.
