Brskovo is the oldest medieval town in these regions and was a highly significant economic and trade center in the broader region during the 13th and part of the 14th century. It was the largest economic center in northern Montenegro during that period and continued to exist even during the Turkish domination of the region. Throughout the territory of present-day Montenegro, Brskovo was the only economic hub that could be compared in importance to the coastal cities.
In Brskovo, the first Serbian coins were minted, resembling Venetian silver coins but weighing one-eighth less. The last mention of Brskovo dates back to 1399 when it fell under Turkish rule.
